The short answer
An electric bike usually costs much less per kilometre in energy than a petrol bike. With the example inputs on this page, petrol costs about Rs 8.65 per km and the electric bike about Rs 1.30 per km, a gap of roughly Rs 4,410 a month at 600 km. Your own electricity price and mileage decide the real figure.

How electricity price changes the result
The table keeps the other example inputs fixed (40 km per litre petrol bike, 2.6 kWh per 100 km electric bike, 600 km a month) and changes only the price of a unit of electricity.
| Electricity price | Electric bike per km | Monthly saving |
|---|---|---|
| Rs 30 per unit | Rs 0.78 | Rs 4,722 |
| Rs 40 per unit | Rs 1.04 | Rs 4,566 |
| Rs 50 per unit | Rs 1.30 | Rs 4,410 |
| Rs 60 per unit | Rs 1.56 | Rs 4,254 |
| Rs 70 per unit | Rs 1.82 | Rs 4,098 |
Petrol stays at Rs 8.65 per km in every row. Even at the highest price shown, the energy cost of the electric bike is a fraction of petrol under these assumptions. The purchase price, not the energy bill, usually decides the payback time. Check bike prices on the PAVE price list.
What is not included
- Battery replacement. Ask the dealer how long the battery warranty lasts and what a replacement costs.
- Charging losses. The energy drawn from the socket is higher than what reaches the battery, which is why real use is above the battery size divided by range.
- Servicing, tyres and insurance for both bikes.
- The subsidy. If you apply through PAVE, read the PAVE scheme guide first.

Questions
How do I calculate electric bike running cost per km?
Multiply the bike's energy use in kWh per 100 km by your electricity price per unit, then divide by 100. For 2.6 kWh per 100 km at Rs 50 a unit, that is 2.6 x 50 / 100 = Rs 1.30 per km.
How do I calculate petrol bike running cost per km?
Divide the petrol price per litre by your bike's km per litre. At Rs 346.00 a litre and 40 km per litre, that is Rs 8.65 per km.
How much cheaper is an electric bike to run?
With our example inputs the electric bike's energy cost is about 85% lower per km. Your result depends on your electricity price, your petrol bike's real mileage and how efficiently the electric bike uses energy, so run your own numbers.
Which electricity price should I use?
Use the all-in price per unit from your latest bill, including taxes, because your slab and distribution company change it. Charging at home usually costs less than a public charger.
Does this include servicing, insurance and battery replacement?
No. It covers energy cost only. A battery eventually needs replacing, and servicing, tyres and insurance also count, so ask the dealer about the battery warranty before you buy.
Where do the example numbers come from?
The petrol price is the notified price from OGRA data via Build Better Pakistan (2026-11-07). The 40 km per litre, Rs 50 a unit and 600 km a month are examples. The 2.6 kWh per 100 km is derived from one PakWheels listing (2.3 kWh battery, 90 km claimed range).
